Vertical oyster gardens, or VOGs, have become a popular way for local citizens to participate in oyster habitat restoration. There are even free VOG distribution programs such as this one through the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program. https://sarasotabay.org/get-involved/vertical-oyster-gardens/
VOGs are popular because anyone with a dock can hang them and oysters will grow if the conditions are right. This is great but it is limited by the amount of people with docks that are willing to participate.
ORE is developing cost effective means of performing on-bottom large scale oyster reef restoration using VOG spikes. VOG spikes have the potential for achieving full reef restoration at a fraction of the cost of traditional largescale oyster restoration methods. This will allow MORE oyster reef restoration!
